I was born in Dallas Texas where I lived until the age of six. My father was transferred to Houston where I lived until the age of twenty. I attended James Madison High School where an innovative English teacher helped plant the seed of film making with an assignment to create a short film. That film won several awards which gained the attention of the Rice Institute Media Center where I continued to make short films and work on student productions.
The idea of working in film became a reality at the age of sixteen during a summer vacation to Arizona. A family relative was directing a Movie for Universal Studios and let me work as a production assistant.
Upon High School graduation I entered the University of Houston as an Art Major, after a disastrous Fall and Spring semester I dropped out and worked as a graphic artist for Six Flags Astroworld. A year later I arrived in Los Angeles to continue my education in Art. I needed a part time job and landed an apprenticeship at Paramount Studios. I attended Art Center College of Design for two years, then left to pursue a full time career in Motion Pictures.
I worked at Paramount for five years and after leaving I felt as if I had received a degree. I learned more than I could imagine and worked on films that are now considered classics.
Freelance opportunities were everywhere and I could bounce from one film to another and then back again. If Paramount had been a University, the new era of Independent Productions would have been the Graduate Schools with the best professors.
The opportunity of working on Independent films opened doors allowing me to hold key positions. That led from being a scenic artist and graphic designer to becoming an assistant art director and eventually art director.
A Joel Silver project was to become my first shot at Production Design. The first project as Production Designer was a pilot called "Parker Kane". I had the opportunity to build a Diner that was set on the edge of a breakwater in San Pedro and a loft that was constructed in a pier warehouse. An ambitious first project with a limited budget. I continued my career, when offered the feature film, "Ricochet". I've enjoyed every project and it's unique challenge, having worked on locations across the States and in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and Canada.
Between film projects I sought out work on Commercials and Music video projects that have a more hands-on approach. My first Music Video involved building an abandoned Drive-in Theater on a butte near Moab Utah for Jon Bon Jovi. You get a better understanding of all departments and their involvement in the process of film-making when the budget, location, conceptual design, storyboards, set decoration and special effects are your responsibility at such a lightning pace.
Every film I've worked on has brought new experiences, different ideas and techniques that combines traditional studio methods with newly developed applications. Computers in film-making are in many ways an extension of the same methods used fifty years ago. The tools have changed, but the skills, creativity and talent backed by practical experience continue to be the necessary ingredients for a successful project.
